Toilet Rats - Synth Redux Vol. 1

Facts Vinyl LP pressing. Building on the release of Toilet Rats IV, Synth Redux Vol. 1 is the next evolution from Minneapolis synth-punk act Toilet Rats, available from Steadfast Records April 11, 2025 digitally, streaming, and on limited edition vinyl, CD, and cassette formats. With Synth Redux Vol. 1, Tommy Ratz (aka Thomas Rehbein) reimagines fan-favorites in a way that mirrors his live solo and duo sets-a stripped-down, synth-heavy version of Toilet Rats. Inspired by the solo shows he's performed, Ratz leans into pulsing drum machines, classic analog synths, and the dark, driving energy of the early synth-pop and post-punk scenes. This collection taps into the underground sounds that defined the transition from punk to new wave, channeling the minimalist, raw energy that once filled dancefloors in dimly lit clubs. Through these reworked tracks, Toilet Rats' gritty, horror and sci-fi-inspired aesthetic meets a moody yet infectious groove, inviting listeners to experience favorites in a fresh and electrifying way. As Ratz describes, "Imagine your favorite Rats songs filtered through the gritty, synth-driven sound of a late-night punk dance party." This edition is not just a remix; it's a homage to an era where punk met the future, a new, minimalist yet powerful take on Toilet Rats' unmistakable sound. "... he's a sharp 1977-1978 Devo Bob Casale or Screamers' Tommy Gear progeny (gnarlier than the well-missed Epoxies), he also can add buzzy guitar-punk like The Ramones (recycling "Havana Affair" for "Drug Bird" like he's The Spits digging The Misfits-oooh, cheeky and great!) and Three Imaginary Boys Cure plus earlier Easy Cure days!" Says Jack Rabid in Big Takeover #95.
