In the 1970s, Alice Cooper changed popular culture. The band, for that is what it was, blended rock with theater, provocation and horror aesthetics. With makeup, snakes and staged executions, they created a show that was as much an art project as music. The group pushed the boundaries of what was considered entertainment. They provoked, played with audience reactions and challenged conventions. The performance was confrontational, and the show's themes revolved around violence, punishment, death and resurrection. They "stuck a stake through the heart of hippie culture," as the singer himself put it. Every member helped shape the Alice Cooper character, but the band split up as early as 1975. Singer Vincent Furnier kept the name and continued as a solo artist, but everything he does is rooted in the band he once created. This is the first book of its kind about the early years of the band Alice Cooper, written by hard rock journalist Carl Linnaeus.
